In this modern world, you will find yoga studios everywhere, but we call this a SHALA for these reasons..

What does Shala mean?

The word Salà in Sanskrit
means "house" or "home.

A yoga shala is not merely a
physical space - it is a sacred house
of learning where students immerse
themselves in the teachings of yoga
with humility, discipline, and
reverence.

The culture in a shala vs studio

Shala: Guided by mouna (discipline of
silence). Conversation is minimal, creating an atmosphere of inner reflection and
contemplation. A small library of yoga texts
may be present, reminding students that yoga is as much study as it is practice.

Studio: More vibrant, social, and community
focused. Talking, mingling, and background
music are often part of the culture.

How atmosphere matters

Shala: Intentionally minimalist. No mirrors, screens, or distractions - only the practitioner, the breath, and simple props if needed. Traditionally, shalas were designed to support pratyahara - the fifth limb of yoga cultivating sensory withdrawal, regulation, and reset.

Studio: Often designed for comfort, commerce, or aesthetics - from spa-like interiors to social media-friendly spaces. The contemplative
environment of a shala may not always be present.

What is the purpose?

Shala: A place where yoga is approached
as adhyayanam (study, inquiry) and
sadhana (practice). Transformation, not
transaction, is its foundation.

Studio: More transactional in nature.
Many arrive for exercise, stress relief, or a
quick physical benefit, often without
engaging yoga as a lifelong path.
